DESCRIPTION:Washington University School of Medicine\n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 9\, 2019\n\n\n\nThe Rheumatology Update & Highlights from ACR course is a review of recent treatment of autoimmune diseases. Course participants will gain a better perspective of how to recognize and diagnose common rheumatologic disorders. \n\n\n\nLectures will provide attendees with the latest information in arthritis\, lupus and other rheumatologic conditions; panel discussions will allow participants to raise questions and participate in dialogue with course faculty. \n\n\n\nThis course may also be of interest to physicians who practice in allergy and immunology\, cardiology and vascular medicine\, critical care and trauma\, dermatology\, endocrinology\, geriatrics\, infectious diseases\, medical genetic and genomics\, nephrology\, oncology and hematology\, ophthalmology\, orthopedics\, pathology\, physical medicine & rehabilitation and pulmonary medicine. \n\n\n\nThis course is designed for rheumatologists\, internists\, primary care physicians\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, pharmacists\, physician assistants and other allied health care professionals. \n\n\n\nThe intended result of this activity is increased knowledge\, competence and performance towards the evaluation and management of the rheumatologic disorders. \n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of this activity\, participants should be able to:\n\n\n\nApply current rheumatology guidelines in clinical practice.Evaluate and interpret current literature relevant to clinical practice in rheumatology.Explain recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases.Transfer this improved understanding and knowledge to the care of patients with rheumatic diseases.Employ evidence-based management that includes the latest ACR recommendations.Implement strategies/resources to recognize the importance of early aggressive treatment in order to improve patient outcomes.Assess the benefits and risks of current and emerging therapies and their outcomes.Evaluate the potential impact of biologic agents with novel mechanisms of action and their potential impact on autoimmune disease management.\n\n\n\nCredit available for this activity:\n\n\n\nAmerican Medical Association (AMA Credit) Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis designates this live activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. DESCRIPTION:St. Louis Rheumatology Association\nWednesday\, February 20th\, 2019\n“Pathogenesis of Osteoarthritis; Outlook for new pharmacologic and stem-cell therapies”\n  \nFarshid Guilak\, Pd.D.\n6:15 – 7:00 pm Registration \n7:00 – 9:00 pm Presentation and dinner \nZodiac\, 100 Plaza\, Frontenac\, MO 63131 \nAbout the presenter\nDr. Farshid Guilak is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University and Director of Research for the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children – St. Louis Shriners. He is also the co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine and has appointments in the Departments of Developmental Biology and Biomedical Engineering. His laboratory is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis\, as a basis for the development of new pharmacologic and stem-cell therapies. \nHe is currently PI of grants from the NIH\, NSF\, DOD\, and several foundations. He has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-edited four books. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomechanics\, Associate editor for Osteoarthritis & Cartilage\, and serves on numerous other journal editorial boards. \nHe is also the President of the Orthopaedic Research Society and Chair of the Skeletal Biology Structure and Regeneration NIH Study Section\, and the first PhD member of the executive committee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF). Majella Doyle\, MDSteven R. Hunt\, MD \nTechnology for general surgery is constantly evolving. This course will provide an interactive and comprehensive experience focusing on management and treatment options from a general surgical perspective. This interactive symposium\, designed for general surgeons\, assists in decision-making for multiple aspects of surgical practice. Active audience participation with faculty is strongly encouraged during case presentations and the faculty panel discussions. \nThe goal of the course is to provide an atmosphere to foster collaboration\, innovation and sharing a cost-effective diagnostic approach for patients with complex general surgery cases involving hernia\, oncology and HPB\, minimally-invasive surgery\, practice measures and outcomes; as well as colorectal surgery. We will cover what is new in enhanced recovery protocols and offer interactive sessions consisting of cases and questions and answers. American College of Surgery (ACS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) self-assessment credits will be offered. \nFollowing this course\, participants attending this course should be able to:\n\nDescribe the management of common general surgery emergency cases.\nDescribe the indications and contraindications for managing various cases of hernia repairs.\nDiscuss evidence-based and diagnostic approach for patients with common benign and malignant colorectal cases.\nRationalize patient management and treatment options for patients with breast disease\, soft tissue tumors.\nIdentify treatment options for patients with biliary and pancreatic diseases.\nReview and provide update on current enhanced recovery protocols.\n\nMeet the professor breakfast sessions.\nThese are small teaching groups covering topics not presented in the main course which provide the opportunity for highly interactive communication in areas of particular interest to registrants.
